Reading Challenge #2 Science and Technology
I write medical romances, I was a nurse for 22 years and I’m married to a doctor. I know and understand the Junior Doctor’s life more than most, but this book took me right back to working on the wards and had me laughing, eye rolling and crying. Adam Kay’s This Is Going To Hurt diary of his life in an NHS hospital is graphic and detailed and anyone who isn’t a medic/health professional can certainly read and understand. In fact, I would recommend everyone reads it to see what a demanding, yet rewarding, job these people do.
However, the book is short and it took me only a night to read it and The Doc (husband, not Adam Kay) suggested I needed to read something else science and technology-oriented. So I chose The Code Book
The Code Book by Simon Singh traces codes back to early Greek and Roman times and takes us on the journey of code breaking through the ages. As a child I was obsessed with the Tudors and Stuarts and so was very keen to read the story of Mary Queen of Scots and learn more about how she plotted to overthrow Queen Elizabeth the first. If you’re a fan of Bletchley Circle stories there’s lots of information in this book about the cracking of the Enigma code which led to the end of the Second World War. It can get a bit bogged down at times with the minutiae of code set-up and design and code breaking but otherwise it was a good read.
Looking forward to book #3 which is Graphic Novels and Comics…..If you like Game Of Thrones, you’re going to love this one! Pop back next month for more information!
